Ed and Georgia Bennett of Bennett Images traveled from Portage to Spencer Glacier on the Alaska Railroad. The U.S. Forest Service provides a guided tour to visitors who wish to take the short hike to the glacier. Or the more adventurous can bring their camping gear and camp out overnight, within earshot of the calving glacier. Rafting trips are also available which take people through the icebergs of Spencer Lake and then down a few miles of the Placer River.
